The newest member of my instrument family

So I just (somewhat impulsively) bought a guitar.

That’s kind of a lie. I’ve wanted a guitar for a really long time. I don’t even remember when I started wanting one, but it was probably back in high school or junior high. It was always in the back of my mind, on the bottom of my Christmas list. I always kind of wanted one, but not as badly as I wanted, say, an mp3 player (this is the clunky brick I had before I was cool enough to get an iPod) or a digital camera or Uggs. (Yeah, I have Uggs. Got a problem with it? My feet get cold super easily, and winters in Missouri suck, okay?)

That's her singing with the guitar.

My sister, on the other hand, decided she really wanted a guitar and got one two or three years ago. She taught herself to play, and she is LEGIT. So good. But she’s also really good at teaching herself things. But anyway, when she got hers, I stole it a couple times while I was at home for Christmas learned the basic chords (G, C, D, E minor, A and a few others).

And ever since then I’ve borrowed people’s guitars when I’ve had some time and have had some pretty cool, though quite basic, individual worship times. And since then I’ve wanted one more.

And since today Peggy and I talked a little bit about what my sabbath Saturdays might look like, I decided to take the plunge and get one. I’m really excited to learn some more chords and songs and to be able to play for some worship time during my sabbaths.

I had done some research on guitars before today, but  I ended up getting the same model as my sister’s. From all the reviews I read, it seems to be a pretty good beginning guitar—not crappy but also not super-expensive.

I got it, a case, a capo, picks and a tuner for less than $200 (and free shipping on everything!). I’m pretty pleased with myself. Normally I wouldn’t just drop 200 bucks like that, but my job this semester has been a huge blessing financially, and since this is something I’ve wanted for a while, I’m okay with it.

My sister is also being awesome and making me a copy of her worship music binder. She’s a pretty cool kid.

Can’t wait to introduce my viola, Elphaba, to my new yet-to-be-named guitar!

Side note: My viola’s name is Elphaba because some of the varnish, in places where it touches my skin, is turning green!  (That’s a Wicked reference, if you didn’t catch that.) Take a look.

Sorry the photos are kind of blurry… you get the gist of it.
